Systems thinking Method
I practice a holistic approach to farming called systems thinking. Each part of the growing methods used influence one another such as the ecosystem, water, air, plants, and animals.
Pest control
Crop rotation, cover crops, beneficial insects, biological pesticides (NOP and OMRI approved), are some of the methods used to prevent and control insects, weeds and plant diseases.
cultivation
Tillage is reserved only for the cultivation of new crop rows and to incorporate cover crops into the soil. I believe minimal tillage helps to preserve the macro-organisms such as earthwoms, insects, mites, and millipedes and the micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi. Both macro and micro-organisms are essential for a healthy, living soil.
irrigation
Drip irrigation is the primary method used to help minimize water use.
nutrients
Sustainable methods are used to add nutrients to the soil such as cover crops, compost, and other organic amendments.
